City officials announced a compromise had been reached toallow alcohol consumption in Washington Square Park at the North Beach Jazz Festival, scheduled for July — but organizers of an June art and music festival in the same location said they were not given a similar accommodation.

Earlier this week Recreation and Park officials ruled that neither festival would be allowed to sell alcohol in the popular park, which is the center of activity for both events.

However, late on Friday the department's executive director, Yomi Agunbiade, sent out a statement saying the Mayor's Office had facilitated a compromise.

“Specifically, during the North Beach Jazz Festival, alcohol sales can be permitted outside of Washington Square Park and consumption will be allowed in a portion of the park. The rest of the park will be accessible to the entire public.”

No mention was made in the statement, however, of the North Beach Festival being granted the same compromise, and the event's organizer, Marsha Garland, said she had not been involved in any conversations on Friday with Agunbiade or the Mayor's Office. The June festival — sponsored by the local Chamber of Commerce — currently has permission to sell alcohol on the street.
