With the Minnesota Vikings eliminated from the playoffs, the New York Giants are free to hire Pat Shurmur for their head coach vacancy. And that means it is likely Jack Del Rio is running the defense for Big Blue next season.

According to a report from ESPN’s Chris Mortenson, the former head coach of the Oakland Raiders is the “leading candidate” for defensive coordinator.

Mortenson adds that whatever New York pays him will offset his remaining salary from the Raiders. He’s owed about $6 million per season over the next three years.

Del Rio had a 25-23 record as head coach in Oakland. His last stint as a DC was with the Denver Broncos, who had one of the best defenses in the league at the time.

The Giants had the second-worst defense in term of total yardage in 2017. They allowed 373.2 yards per game as they went 3-13, falling way short of expectations.
