Israeli army kills 3 Palestinian in Gaza border clashes

TEL AVIV, Israel — The Israeli army said it shot and killed three Palestinians, two of whom threw explosives devices, in two separate incidents along the Gaza border on Sunday.

Two Palestinians were shot dead after they breached the Gaza border fence and hurled explosives at soldiers, the army said.

Shortly before the two Palestinians were killed the army said it shot dead another Palestinian who was attempting to cross the border.

A fourth Palestinian was injured by Israeli fire and arrested by the army.

The incidents come at a particularly tense time as thousands of Palestinians stage protests along the Israel-Gaza border each Friday.

Israel says that Hamas, the Islamist group which most of the West considers a terrorist organization, is using the protests as a mask to carry out attacks on the Israeli border fence and border communities.

Since March 30, 49 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire, with most of the deaths occurring during the protests.

The Israeli army, which faces accusations of using excessive force from the United Nations and others, says it only uses live fire as a “last resort.”
