On International Women’s Day, Kerr praises women who ‘kick some ass’ in the NBA

OAKLAND — When Steve Kerr opened his pregame press conference on Thursday night, the Golden State Warriors head coach didn’t realize it was International Women’s Day. That didn’t stop Kerr from speaking intelligently on the topic when asked about Becky Hammon, an assistant on the staff of San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich.

“I know how strongly the Spurs organization values her,” Kerr said of Hammon who was the first female full-time NBA coach.”

She’s currently being considered for the top post at Colorado St. University.

“I’ve talked to Pop about here and she’s a big time coach,” Kerr added. “So, she’s paving the way, I think, for younger coaches. We’ll see how it all plays out. It’s not an easier barrier to breach. It’s a man’s world, the NBA.”

As he’s done in the past, Kerr also praised broadcaster Doris Burke and Warriors  head performance therapist Chelsea Lane.

“I’m always inspired by women who sort of come into their own in this ‘man’s world’ and kick some ass.”
