Increased bus service launches on Muni's 5-Fulton line

A new pilot program will launch this morning to provide increased service on the 5-Fulton Muni bus line.

Supervisors Eric Mar, Jane Kim and London Breed are expected to be in attendance to kick off the program at the southeast corner of Van Ness Avenue and McAllister Street.

Approved by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency board in mid-October, the pilot creates new 5-Fulton Limited and 5-Fulton Short services to increase bus frequency and reduce crowding on the line, which runs along Fulton and McCallister streets.

A 20 percent to 30 percent increase in capacity is expected during peak hours between the Fulton Street and Sixth Avenue stop and the temporary Transbay Terminal, the route's most crowded portion.

Due to bus stop consolidation, 9 percent of customers will need to walk an extra block for pick-up, and 16 of 114 parking spaces have been eliminated along the route.

SFMTA officials say safety will be improved by reconfiguring lanes and bus stops.

The pilot may continue after a year depending on evaluations and results. For information, visit www.sfmta.com.
