Human skeleton found at downtown SF construction site

A construction crew working on the new Transbay Terminal project in San Francisco on Tuesday morning unearthed human remains.

The Transbay Joint Powers Authority said that workers who were installing concrete at the site of the new transportation hub made the discovery at about 8 a.m. The bones were found at a depth of about 60 feet, according to a spokeswoman for the project.

The agency said its archaeologists worked in coordination with the San Francisco coroner’s office and determined that the remains are of Native American descent.

The next step is for the California Native American Heritage Commission to help determine how the remains should be handled.

“Out of respect for the Native American community, images of the remains will not be provided, and no further information will be made available until after the project has consulted with the Most Likely Descendent,” Stephanie Reichin, spokeswoman for the Transbay Joint Powers Authority, said in a statement.

Work on the project is continuing, except in the area of the remains, in order to ensure their protection, Reichin said.
