On its 2017 Paul Epworth-produced fifth album “V,” British quintet The Horrors graduated from trashy, garage-punk roots to sleek Gothic/New Wave-retro territory. And in recent years the band has opened for New Order and Depeche Mode. But don’t read too much into it, says tall, ebony-garbed frontman Faris Badwan. “Because it’s a funny thing with the ’80s — to us, it’s never been a deliberate thing. When you’ve got a group that uses keyboards and a singer with an unusually deep voice, it’s automatically going to make people recall that era,” says Badwan, who stays so busy with non-Horrors pursuits (he and his girlfriend Rachel Zeffira have a spooky duo, Cat’s Eyes) that he doesn’t have time to dwell on it.
Isn’t there a third Cat’s Eyes effort underway right now?
Well, we just did another film soundtrack, which we’ve been talking to Geoff Barrows about him releasing on his label. The movie, “Elizabeth Harvest,” is about cloning, but it’s also retelling the myth of Bluebeard, and it’s got a similar tone to “Ex Machina,” which I loved. But Cat’s Eyes does have a new album written that we need to record.
Do you guys wake up each morning and start writing?
Heh. When Rachel and I first met, she was one of those people who would wake up really early in the morning and then go and sit at her piano and write. And thankfully, I’ve changed all that. Now she goes to bed at 6 a.m. And I usually stay up all night and won’t go to bed until 7 a.m. I don’t think it’s necessarily better. It’s just the way my brain works now.
What about your visual art? Any exhibits?
Yeah. I just did one at the Royal Society of the Arts. But it’s a cool place in London to exhibit, and I did a show there at the end of last year. So I’m sill figuring out what I want to do with my art. But I’ve been doing a lot of music production recently. Like Let’s Eat Grandma, these two amazingly-talented 18-year-old girls who are going to have a great career.
Has anyone hired you for your art yet?
Yeah. I did the cover for a Charlatans album a few years ago. But it was more a case of them taking a section of one of my drawings and using it as their album cover rather than having me do the whole design and everything. It was just an excerpt.
How do you generate all this work? Do you have a bat phone in your study?
So far, it’s just been from people coming up to me and asking, really. But a bat phone would be a lot more convenient.
