SFPD arrests man less than a day after gruesome discovery at car crash

Less than 24 hours after the incident, San Francisco police arrested a man they allege was the shooter in a Tenderloin killing that caused the victim to crash his car early Wednesday morning.

Dontae Allen, 38, was arrested around midnight Thursday outside of San Francisco, said San Francisco Police Department’s Major Crimes Division Capt. Alexa O’Brien.

Preston Bradford, 34, was identified Thursday morning by the San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office as the man who was found fatally shot at the scene of a vehicle crash. Bradford marked The City’s eighth homicide victim of the year.

Soon after arriving at the scene at about 2:15 a.m., police realized the crash was also a murder scene. Bradford, a San Francisco resident, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers had responded to a report of a crash in the area of Van Ness Avenue and Eddy Street and found Bradford inside the car with head trauma that was later determined to be consistent with a gunshot wound, police said.

Police believe Allen and Bradford knew one another, and that Allen may have been a passenger in the car.

Bradford was shot in the head and in at least one other place by a passenger in the car, according to a police source with knowledge of the incident. This theory in part comes from the trajectory of the bullets, the source said.

The arrest was made possible through a collaborative effort with investigations, the Gang Task Force, Bayview plainclothes officers, the Special Investigations Division and homicide investigators. It was a huge collective effort to put the picture together, said O’Brien.

Allen was booked into County Jail on suspicion of murder at 3:54 a.m. No bail has been set.

She added that video surveillance was a key piece of evidence as well as witnesses.
