Overstock.com opted out of its naming rights on Saturday to Oakland’s NFL and MLB stadium.
The well-worn facility will go back to being called the Oakland Coliseum, shedding its O.co moniker. A shame for cheating boyfriends riding BART who need a gentle reminder where to buy cheap jewelry.
OAKLAND ISN’T ALONE
The status of the naming rights of Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Denver is also uncertain after the company filed for bankruptcy in March.
One Colorado marijuana company, Native Roots, would like to be considered should the sports retailer relinquish its sponsorship.
Striking the serious tone necessary to align with an uptight corporation like the NFL, Native Roots CEO Josh Ginsberg said in a news release, “We may breathe green but we bleed orange.”
I’m convinced the league will fast-track his application on the power of that metaphor alone.
Junior Rosco Allen announced Friday he will take advantage of a new rule that allows players to gauge their worth to NBA teams before forfeiting NCAA eligibility.
Allen averaged 15.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
He’s unlikely to crack the first round and smart to test the market before returning to the Farm.
FINE IN LAKERLAND
Los Angeles Laker Julius Randle was the latest NBA player fined for paying homage to Sam Cassell’s dance that highlights the relative size of his privates — or, as I call it, the perfect way to celebrate a game-winner.
The league fined Randle $15,000, proving why this particular style of frolic is so great: If it wasn’t, why would the players keep paying to do it?
FINAL FOUR: IDEAL NAP TIME
Remember the NCAA Tournament? Believe it or not, it’s still trucking along even with the excitement of opening weekend long faded.
A pair of Final Four games were played Saturday with the winning teams securing margins of victory of 44 (Villanova over Oklahoma) and 17 (North Carolina beating Syracuse).
The Tar Heels opened as 2 point favorites to win it all, according to the sportsbook William Hill.
