Occupation: Telecommunications requirements manager

Residence: San Francisco

What he does: Sams is a grass-roots organizer for nonprofits. He restarted the Brothers for Sisters, a program that supports the Women’s Health Services of Lyon-Martin, a San Francisco nonprofit that provides primary care for more than 3,000 women and transgender people each year. Having started Brothers for Sisters in 1995, Sams organizes and rallies men in the greater Bay Area to fund and support Lyon-Martin, which provides health care and support services to women and transgender people who lack access to quality care.

Why he does it: Sams said he was raised to do for others without thought of return. “Whatever my talents and gifts, they only feel like they’re valuable when I’m using them in the support of others,” Sams said.

The impact: “Steven has an incredible amount of enthusiasm,” said Dr. Dawn Harbatkin, medical and executive director of Lyon-Martin. “And he has a way of getting people to open their wallets and give in ways I’ve never seen before.”
