The Examiner celebrates people who made a difference in 2006

<b>Occupation: Senior at Mills High School in Millbrae

Residence: San Bruno

What he did: Malick, a high-functioning 18-year-old with Down syndrome who recently fought off leukemia after nine months of chemotherapy, is credited with saving his mother’s life on Feb. 15 when she suddenly collapsed with a seizure.

How he did it: Malick came home from school and saw his mother, Diane, passed out in the front yard. He used his mother’s cell phone to call the cell phone of his father, David, a teacher at San Bruno Parkside Intermediate School. He then phoned 911 while rushing to the home of a neighbor he knew was a nurse. He brought her back to care for his mother until the ambulance arrived.

The impact: His mother’s seizure turned out to be a malignant brain tumor which is now totally in remission following surgery and chemo. Malick was voted Mills High School Student of the Month for his bravery and good spirits while undergoing chemotherapy.
