Holiday Angels The Examiner celebrates people who made a difference in 2006.
Occupation: San Francisco police officer
Residence: San Francisco
What she does: Lewis, an SFPD officer for 13 years, has immersed herself in the youth community, heading up Police Athletic League programs, while also taking part in the P.A.L. Cadet Program, a group dedicated to promoting careers in law enforcement for young adults. Lewis also works in the School Safety Patrol Department, monitoring safety environments daily at 20 city schools.
Why she does it: “Kids are the most important people in the world to me,” Lewis said. “I want to be there for them as a friend, to give some stability and balance to their lives. Children are not only our future, but they are also our present.”
The impact: Lewis is a fixture in San Francisco, knowing scores of teenagers around The City by their first name. Her efforts have also resulted in her being named the godmother of 10 children whose lives she has affected. “Edie is a great source of inspiration,” said Kevin Martin, vice president of the San Francisco Police Association. “She is an excellent goodwill ambassador for the San Francisco Police Department to people of this city.”
