Five people including a pair of young children were injured in San Francisco late Wednesday afternoon when a hit-and-run driver struck a pedicab carrying a family of four along the Embarcadero, according to authorities.

The collision occurred near Pier 29 at the Embarcadero and Sansome Street at around 4:14 p.m., according to police and fire officials. Among the injured victims were a five-year-old and an eight-year-old child who had been riding in the pedicab with their parents.

Police spokeswoman Officer Grace Gatpandan said the pedicab operator suffered life-threatening injuries, while the father and mother suffered non-life threatening injuries, as did the two children.

“The vehicle took off,” Gatpandan said, noting that it was last seen heading toward the Bay Bridge.

Police described the vehicle only as a light-colored sedan.

Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital spokesman Brent Andrew said the hospital had received four patients from the incident, including two minors and two adults. The hospital did not release information on the minors, but Andrew said a male adult was listed in critical condition and a female adult in serious condition.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has surveillance or cell phone video of the incident is asked to contact police at (415) 575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 with “SFPD” at the beginning of the message.
