A 28-year-old hippopotamus has died at the Los Angeles Zoo.
The zoo said in a statement that the male hippo known as “Jabba” was euthanized Friday, after a “difficult decision” from the staff.
Jabba had been under veterinary care for a month and had not been responding to treatment.
The zoo did not give specific details about Jabba's illness, saying the body will be taken to the California Animal Health and Food Safety lab for a complete necropsy.
Jabba lived at the San Diego Zoo for many years and fathered several calves before coming to Los Angeles in 2009.
