Lincoln rides running back’s tremendous game to win rematch of Turkey Bowl

David Henderson called for the rest of the Lincoln football team to join him at midfield at Kezar Stadium just moments after putting on one of the most electrifying performances in Academic Athletic Association play in recent memory.

“It wasn’t one of those nights for me,” the junior running back said. “It was one of those nights for the Lincoln Mustangs.”

Henderson was simply astonishing Friday night against Balboa, rushing for 376 yards and five touchdowns on 35 carries in the Mustangs’ 38-32 win. But against the game Buccaneers, the outcome really wasn’t settled until Lincoln (3-1 overall, 1-0 AAA) recovered an onside kick with 1:24 remaining in the game.

Henderson scored on runs of 41, 25, 40, 45 and 46 yards in the rematch of last year’s Turkey Bowl (which Lincoln won 21-20). On plays that seemed to be stopped at the line of scrimmage, Henderson’s No. 24 would emerge from the pile and break free.

On his 25-yard second-quarter touchdown, the Balboa defense seemed poised to stop Henderson near the right sideline for a loss. Unfazed, the junior changed course and sprinted all the way back to the left side and juked his way into the end zone.

But had Henderson and the Lincoln offense been slowed at all, Balboa (0-4, 0-1) would surely have snatched the game away. Buccaneers runningback Soloman Webster ran for 126 yards and two scores, quarterback Eric Lara (10-for-17, 179 yards, two touchdowns) found Edgar Wilson in the end zone for a 34-yard touchdown strike to make it 26-20 with 7:28 left and Luther Gary returned a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown with 6:11 remaining in the game to make the score 32-26.

But Henderson seemed to always have the answer.

Phillipe Lewis ran for 69 yards on 13 carries for Lincoln.
