Heiress Patty Hearst has been in the spotlight many times, but rarely has it been for something as pleasant, or as cuddly, as guiding a dog to the upper echelons of the 139th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show this week.

Hearst claimed victory in the toy dog category Monday with GCH Hallmark Jolei Rocket Power, a shih tzu with the long, silky hair of Rapunzel and the weird goblin face of Rumpelstiltskin. On Tuesday, The Notorious GCHJRP — Rocket for short — threw his collar into the ring for best in show honors at Madison Square Garden.

Hearst, granddaughter of onetime San Francisco Examiner publisher William Randolph Hearst, came to national prominence in 1974, when the UC Berkeley student was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army. The SLA, which included nary a Symbion and liberated precisely nothing, renamed Hearst “Tania” and forced their captive to rob a bank, for which the heiress later served two years in prison before having her sentence commuted by President Jimmy Carter.

“People move on,” she said Monday. “I guess people somehow imagine you don’t evolve in your life. I have grown daughters and grand-daughters and other things that normal people have.”
