Handgun found in Lafayette high school backpack

Trending Articles

Acalanes High School officials found an unloaded handgun in a 16-year-old student's backpack today, but police do not suspect the teen intended to use it, Lafayette Police Chief Michael Hubbard said.

“There were no bullets or anything else found that would indicate that there was any planned violence at the school,” Hubbard said.

School administrators had been searching the teen's backpack for what Hubbard characterized as “another type of contraband that would have constituted a minor school violation” when they found the handgun at about 11:41 a.m.

Officers responded to the school, located at 1200 Pleasant Hill Road in Lafayette, and thoroughly searched the boy, his backpack, his locker and other surrounding areas, but found no bullets, Hubbard said.

Police also found no evidence that the boy had been planning to commit any violence at the school, had made any threats or that he was angry with anyone, Hubbard said.

Officers are continuing to investigate the incident and are looking into the possibility that the boy could have been holding the gun for someone else, Hubbard said.

In the meantime, the teen has been booked into Juvenile Hall in Martinez for possessing a weapon on school grounds, Hubbard said.
