About 11,800 acres of coastal open space will continue to be preserved after the state Supreme Court refused to hear a petition from a group that challenged the validity of the program.

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, a local greenbelt, won approval to expand its boundaries by 220 square miles from Pacifica to the Santa Cruz County line in 2004. Since then, the district has purchased and preserved 5,841 acres of San Mateo County coastland.

The decision allows the district to continue acquiring open spaces without worrying about its right to obtain such land.
