It’s only fitting that Grace Cathedral is among the many San Francisco institutions celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love.
The church, which was consecrated in 1964 and the site of a historic sermon by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1965 attended by 5,000 people, has been known for promoting civil and social rights, and adapting to current times.
Today, the cathedral continues to foster values of peace, love, community and consciousness, with its large weekly yoga class (600 participants under its nave), labyrinth walk events (often to live music or candlelight); and its defense of marriage choice and LGBT rights.
The four special June Summer of Love programs begun June 2 with a concert by singer-songwriters and Crossbill Records label mates Tom Brosseau and Garrett Pierce, who “infuse 1967 folk into a 2017 acoustic pop sound.”
Brosseau, a North Dakota native now living in Los Angeles, is a real troubadour. He’s toured Japan, Canada, Portugal, Iceland, Australia; played bars, backyards, grand halls, subways, theaters and old folks homes; and exchanged tunes with the likes of Ramblin’ Jack Elliott and Bonnie Raitt.
Pierce, a folksy Bay Area-based singer-songwriter, has released his fourth album, “Dusk.” He also has an evocative cover of Paul Simon’s “The Boy in the Bubble.”
Joel Selvin, longtime rock music critic, appears in a June 11 Forum session, telling stories from his book “Summer of Love: The Inside Story of LSD, Rock & Roll, Free Love and High Times in the Wild West” and offering his insights on the impact of the 19667 cultural revolution born in the Haight-Ashbury.
On the evening of June 22, a free, family-friendly party offers dancing in the aisles of the cathedral to classics from 1960s and modern tunes inspired by the times, provided by Make It Funky DJs; a Mad Alchemy liquid light show echoes those of psychedelic ballrooms during the movement’s heyday.
The final show is a San Francisco Sound Meditation, in which Guy Douglas leads musicians playing ancient instruments, in “hypnotic, gentle” concerts designed to deepen meditation practice.
