Golden Gate Bridge parking prices set to increase

It’s about to get a little pricier to drive to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge.

Parking lot fees could go up at the premier tourist attraction, following a vote by the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District on Friday.

Right now drivers are allowed to park in the Golden Gate Bridge employee parking lot on weekends for a $5 daily rate, according to a bridge district staff report. The Toll Plaza East Parking lot on the San Francisco side of the bridge is 25 cents every 15 minutes, with a two-hour maximum parking time.

Under the proposed new fee structure, drivers would be charged $5 an hour up to a maximum of three hours for bothlots.

It’s not all doom and gloom for drivers, however.

The bridge district is also considering allowing parking in the employee lot on weekdays from 3:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. May through September, and 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. October through April. The employee lot features 50 parking spaces and the Toll Plaza East Parking Lot boasts 26 standard parking spots and three parking spots for those with disability placards.

Those parking lots rake in about $200,000 annually, according to a bridge district staff report, which is used to “offset expenses” like restrooms and traffic mitigation staffing. San Francisco parking lots and garages range from $1 an hour in off-peak times to $10 an hour at peak times, bridge staff wrote.

The new potential revenue may reach as high as $400,000, according to the district.
