Giants utilize timely hitting to beat Brewers late

An unfortunate call led to the luckiest of breaks for the Giants on Wednesday.

In the bottom of the seventh of their game against the Milwaukee Brewers, home plate umpire Fieldin Culbreth called Kelby Tomlinson out on strikes on a dubious call around the infielder’s knees for the second out with men on first and second.

Since they were running on contact, Denard Span and Gorkys Hernandez were able to score easily on a check-swing double that landed just inside the third-base line, giving the Giants a two-run lead.

They proved to be the winning runs and San Francisco went on to win 4-2 after Mark Melancon and Sam Dyson combined to close out the game.

Dyson did struggle a bit, allowing a home run by former Oakland Athletics catcher Stephen Vogt in the top of the ninth. But with the offense tacking on an insurance run the frame before, it didn’t play into the final result.
