Giants legend Orlando Cepeda in critical condition

San Francisco Giants Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda was rushed to the hospital on Monday. The San Francisco Chronicle’s Henry Schulman reported Cepeda needed attention “after being stricken at a Fairfield golf course.”

On Wednesday morning, the Giants issued a statement, revealing more details about his condition:

Baseball Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda was hospitalized on Monday evening due to a cardiac incident.  He remains in critical condition at a Bay Area hospital.  The Cepeda family asks for privacy during this time.  Please keep Orlando and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Cepeda played eight-plus seasons in San Francisco. He was an All-Star six times and won Rookie of the Year as a 20-year old in 1958.

The team celebrated him with a statue outside of AT&T Park in 2008.

“When things like this happen to you, that’s when I say to myself, ‘Orlando, you’re a very lucky person,’ ” Cepeda said to John Shea after the unveiling.
