The owner and chef of Bubba’s Diner in San Anselmo and Kitchen 39 in the Presidio has created Le Dîner à San Francisco, a picnic dinner for 3,500 people on Friday. The location will be announced on the day of the event, pop-up style. Attendees bring their own food and booze, and should wear white. For more information, visit ledinerasanfrancisco.info.
How did you come up with the idea for a pop-up picnic on this scale? I read an article in The New York Times about the first one in Paris. I couldn’t find anyone doing it in San Francisco, so I started a website and a Facebook page, and within the first week we had 2,000 RSVPs. I’m into things that haven’t been done before. That’s what keeps me up at night. The new and the interesting and the unknown have always been a source of inspiration.
The guest list is now full, although there is a waiting list if more space becomes available. Do you think you will do this event again? Absolutely. The picnic in all-white will be a stepping stone to a variety of large-scale event dinners. We have some great ideas going, thinking about New Year’s and springtime. The group that has been helping me is great. We’ve had an off-the-charts response.
