Score one for the Funston Street neighbors.

Going against the recommendations of staff members, Muni’s Board of Directors voted Tuesday against rerouting the 2-Clement bus line down a block of Funston Street, a decision that pleased local residents, who complained that the transit vehicles would be a safety hazard and would clog up the small thoroughfare.

In an effort to reduce operating costs, Muni plans on scuttling the 2-Clement’s route west of Park Presidio Boulevard, but the agency has been searching for an appropriate side street for the to line to turn around on to head back east.

At a Board of Directors meeting earlier this month, neighbors on the 300 block of Funston protested the changes to reroute the 2-Clement bus line down their street. The changes were also to include plans for a terminal — where the Muni buses would idle — on the block.

After hearing the protests for a second straight meeting, the Muni board agreed to vote against the Funston Street option for the 2-Clement. As a result, the bus won’t have a finalized route until Oct. 20, when the board reconvenes again to discuss side street options for the line.

Service and route changes to several Muni bus and light rail lines are scheduled to go into effect in November. The 2-Clement is the only line which doesn’t have a finalized route change yet.
