Former USF goalie earns spot with US Women’s National Team

It’s been an eventful week for Madalyn Schiffel, a former goalkeeper for the University of San Francisco women’s soccer team.

She joined the US U23 Women’s National Team camp in Carson from Jan. 6 to 13, a day after being acquired by the Seattle Reign of the National Women’s Soccer League.

This isn’t Schiffel’s first turn at the US U23 camp as she participated last summer during the Nordic Women’s Tournament in England.

The Seattle team was in need of a goaltender after Hope Solo announced she wouldn’t be returning to the organization in August. Schiffel played for Avaldsnes IL in the Norwegian Toppserien last season when she earned the award for being the top goalkeeper. Her team finished second in the league and it qualified for the UEFA Champions League.

The USF men’s basketball team will look to get back on track after losing to Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s last week with a game against BYU on Thursday and another on Saturday at Pacific.

USF’s women’s basketball team also lost to Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s last week, dropping its record to 8-7 on the season. The Dons will have a pair of home games this weekend to improve upon their 2-2 mark in West Coast Conference play.
