A 6-year-old first-grade student brought a gun to his elementary school in the Excelsior district on Friday, according to San Francisco school officials.

Workers at Cleveland Elementary School found the gun in the boy’s backpack after hearing other students talking about the child having the weapon, according to Gentle Blythe, a spokeswoman for the San Francisco Unified School District.

After making the discovery, school officials called the police, who confiscated the gun, Blythe said. The student said he thought the weapon was a fake, and school officials are not sure if it was loaded, Blythe said. No one was injured, and the incident occurred before classes began on Friday morning.

The student was suspended and the district will work with child protection services and the boy’s family to determine what the next steps are to getting him re-enrolled in another school, Blythe said.

The incident was the second in one week involving a gun at a San Francisco public school.

On Thursday evening, a 17-year-old student taking night classes at Lowell High School was discovered to have a loaded gun.

Security guards found the gun on the student after searching him because teachers noticed a marijuana smell in the area. Police officers arrested the student without incident, according to Blythe.
