Beast: The thriller by Michael Pearce is about a troubled young woman in a small island community who falls for a mysterious outsider who empowers her to escape her oppressive family, and comes under suspicion for a series of murders. Rated R. At the Kabuki and Embarcadero.

Book Club: Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen star as lifelong friends whose book club tackles “Fifty Shades of Grey,” triggering new romances and rekindling old flames. Rated PG-13.

Boom For Real-The Late Teenage Years Of Jean-Michel Basquiat: The film by Sara Driver explores the pre-fame years of the celebrated American artist, and how New York City, its people and the shifting culture of the late 1970s-80s shaped his vision. Not rated. At the Opera Plaza.

Deadpool 2: Ryan Reynolds is back as the crazy assassin and sometime X-Man, joined on murderous adventures by Domino (Zazie Beetz) and Cable (Josh Brolin). Rated R.

The Guardians: The film by Xavier Beauvois based on a novel by Ernest Perochon is a French World War I-set drama about a mother, her daughter and an orphan tending the family farm while the men are at the front. Rated R. At the Vogue.

Pope Francis: A Man of His Word: The documentary by Wim Wenders shows the religious leader on a personal journey to present his work of reform and address issues from wealth inequality to the environment, social justice and war and peace. Rated PG. At the Embarcadero.

The Seagull: Annette Bening, Saoirse Ronan, Corey Stoll and Elisabeth Moss star in the adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s classic play about misplaced love, art fame and foolishness among family and friends on a Russian country estate. Rated PG-13. At the Embarcadero.

Show Dogs: A detective and his four-legged partner go undercover to crack a case at a high-stakes pageant for pooches in the movie starring Will Arnett, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Natasha Lyonne, Jordin Sparks, Gabriel Iglesias, Shaquille O’Neal, Alan Cumming and Stanley Tucci. Rated PG.
