American Animals: The eclectic heist movie by Bart Layton tells the true story of four young men who attempt steal a rare, valuable book from the special collections room of a university library. Rated R. At the Embarcadero.

Filmworker: The movie profiles Leon Vitali, an actor who surrendered a thriving career to become Stanley Kubrick’s right-hand man and jack of all trades for more than two decades. Not rated. At the Opera Plaza.

Hereditary: Secrets emerge after the death of a matriarch sets her daughter’s family on a seemingly inevitable, ominous path in the movie starring Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd and Gabriel Byrne. Rated R.

Hotel Artemis: Jodie Foster stars as a woman who runs an exclusive criminals-only emergency room in strife-ridden near-future Los Angeles in the film written and directed by Drew Pearce. Rated R.

A Kid Like Jake: Claire Danes and Jim Parsons play a couple whose gender non-conforming 4-year-old forces them to change their perceptions. Not rated. At the Balboa.

Mary Shelley: Elle Fanning stars as the trailblazing Gothic author embroiled in a heated affair that drives her to create her masterpiece, “Frankenstein.” Rated PG-13. At the 4-Star.

Ocean’s 8: Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett recruit an all-female crew to pull off a $150 million diamond heist in the reboot also featuring Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Richard Armitage, James Corden, Rihanna and Helena Bonham Carter. Rated PG-13.

Won’t You Be My Neighbor?: Morgan Neville directs the documentary portrait of Fred “Mister” Rogers, who for decades positively affected and educated children through his public television series. Rated PG-13. At the Embarcadero.
