Ferry rescues passengers from sinking boat near Alcatraz Island

A ferry rescued 10 people from a sinking boat in San Francisco Bay waters near Alcatraz Island on Thursday night, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard received a mayday call from the sinking vessel, a 31-foot Chris-Craft recreational boat, at about 8:45 p.m., Coast Guard. Lt. Nicole Emmons said. The sinking boat apparently struck a rock near the former prison island and began taking on water.

A ferry that shuttles visitors to Alcatraz Island, the Alcatraz Clipper, received the mayday call and diverted its path to rescue the passengers from the sinking boat, Emmons said.

All 10 passengers aboard the sinking vessel were rescued and no injuries were reported. The passengers were taken to Pier 33 in San Francisco.

Emmons said the damaged boat sunk into the waters, and it will be the responsibility of the boat’s owner to retrieve the vessel.
