Fat Possum scores coup with signing of Spiritualized

Trending Articles

The Oxford, Miss.-based folk-blues label Fat Possum has released some rustic classics over the years, from great American artists like The Walkmen, Band Of Horses and even the late Townes Van Zandt. But lately, the imprint hasn’t been playing possum — it’s been branching into adventurous new signings like Wavves and The Black Keys.

And now, its coup de grace: They just signed Jason Pierce and his ethereal British combo Spiritualized, who are currently wrapping up their Fat Possum debut, due for release this fall.

The as-yet-untitled set, the band’s seventh, follows the three-year-old “Songs in A&E,” penned after Pierce’s literally near-death experience and extended hospital stay.

Spiritualized, of course, is responsible for 1997’s definitive classic “Ladies And Gentlemen … We Are Floating In Space.” And on March 11, tickets will go on sale for the group’s first scheduled comeback gig, this Oct. 11 at London’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall.

Major labels: Zip; Fat Possum: One!
