Family IDs man killed by Muni, refutes reports he was homeless

A family member of the man fatally crushed by a Muni bus Wednesday has come forward to identify him as Albert Long, 39, a San Francisco resident.

Corina Rampola, who lives in Lexington, Ky., contacted The Examiner to refute several news stores that suggested her sister’s partner of 12 years was homeless.

“I want to make it clear that this was not some vagrant, homeless person,” Rampola said. “This was a working, contributing member of society, who has a family.”

Long was seen by several witnesses stumbling on the sidewalk near the rear of a 26-Valencia bus at Fifth and Jessie streets moments before he was struck, according to police. The bus driver told police she checked the mirror but did not see him coming down the sidewalk.

Rampola said she was most concerned about how the media coverage of the incident affected Long’s 12-year-old daughter, Victoria, who lives in Antioch with her mother, Rampola’s twin sister.

“The situation is tragic enough, without her having to read that the public thinks her father is homeless,” she said.
