Ever Gold [Projects], a gallery at 1275 Minnesota St., is on summer break now, but has great plans for expansion as it anticipates its 10th anniversary in January.
Owner-director Andrew McClintock announced that the gallery is beginning the process of doubling its space inside the Minnesota Street Project complex, adding 1,500 square feet and the ability to host two exhibitions simultaneously.
The first show to open in the new space is “Defying the Narrative: Contemporary Art from West and Southern Africa,” featuring work by 14 African artists: Takunda Regis Billiat, Frédéric Bruly Bouabré, Serge Attukwei Clottey, Paa Joe, Troy Makaza, Wycliffe Mundopa, Gareth Nyandoro, Simphiwe Ndzube, Gresham Nyaude, Irvin Pascal, Cameron Platter, Julio Rizhi, Nicola Roos and Moffat Takadiwa.
It opens with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 8 and will be on view through Oct. 27.
LOCAL FOOD, DRINK UPDATE
The Beehive, the “Mad Men” era-themed cocktail bar established by Steve Werney, Phil West and Arnold Eric Wong in the spring on Valencia Street, is touting new drinks by lead bartender Emilio Salehi: The Bachelors #1, #2 and #3 are inspired by the 1960s TV show “The Dating Game.”
ONE65, a “French culinary destination” envisioned by James Beard Award-winning chef Claude Le Tohic, is set to open this fall; occupying six floors at 165 O’Farrell St. (across from Macy’s), the venture will include a patisserie on the first and second floors serving breakfast, lunch and takeout; a third-floor bistro for lunch and dinner; and cocktail lounge and fine dining on the fifth and sixth floors, with the casual dining areas slated to open first.
Tank18, the South of Market urban winery at 1345 Howard St., has recently added craft cocktails and food. The new menu by chef Brandon Cavazos, with a focus on snacks and items to share, includes hot or dry wings, fries, burgers, salads and soft serve.
Inspired by Grace Slick and the Jefferson Airplane, White Rabbit, part of the PlumpJack Group, opened in the former Matrix space on Fillmore in the Marina district this month. Drinks include the Cottontail Cup (Pimm’s, Campari, apricot liqueur, lemon, tonic, mint) and Mad Hatter (habenero-infused mezcal, ancho reyes, cilantro agave, lime, pineapple gum syrup); the snacking menu offers deviled eggs, charcuterie and cheese.
Ballast Point, the San Diego-based craft beer purveyor, has plans to open in Mission Bay in 2019, its eighth location in California; company president Ben Dollard says, “We’re eager to make a more personal connection with our NorCal neighbors through our San Francisco tasting room and kitchen.”
Laureate, a bar next to The Laurel Inn, a Presidio Heights hotel at 444 Presidio Ave, opened last week. Manager Sam McGinnis says the menu of classic and specialty cocktails and snacks “playfully celebrates the spirit of San Francisco alongside incredible, locally sourced distillers, producers and ingredients from up and down the state of California.” Plans are to host live, local music, too.
Piri Pica, a new “fast-casual Portuguese” concept (in the making for five years) from Khalid Mushasha (Lolinda, Black Cat) and chef Telmo Faria (Tacolicious, Uma Casa) serving spicy grilled chicken with sides and salads, is scheduled to open Sept. 4 at 590 Valencia St. in the Mission.
In the East Bay, Bardo Lounge & Supper Club, a project of Oakland locals Seth and Jenni Bregman in the former Michel Bistro space on Lakeshore Avenue, is slated to open in September. The new spot will have a “1960s-era dinner party vibe” with an American menu by chefs Anthony Salguero and Brian Starkey and beverages by Jason Huffman.
Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson, pushing Booking.com’s “Taste of Travel” campaign, found the Bay Area among the nation’s top dining and travel destinations: His local eatery recommendations include State Bird Provisions, Mandalay, Camino and Cassava, and for accommodations, he suggests Casa Luna.
