U.S. President

It is fashionable for editorial endorsements for president these days to be more anti-Trump than pro-Clinton, and we will not buck that trend here. As we said in our endorsement for Bernie Sanders in the June primary, Clinton has many drawbacks as a candidate: “Hillary Clinton is a flawed standard bearer for the [Democratic] party.”

But they are flaws we can live with. The same can not be said of Trump.

It would be reassuring if a Trump presidency was merely unfathomable — but unfortunately, we’ve all had ample time to fathom its contours over the past year. Instead, the prospect of Trump in the White House is a terrifying, real possibility, and one we must reject.

Clinton may not be the presidential candidate we would most like to endorse, but if elected she promises to preserve and build on enough of Barack Obama’s legacy that the country will remain fundamentally on the right track. Her leadership would ensure needed support for working families, and champion the rights of immigrants, women, minorities and children to lead lives of opportunity, inclusion and dignity in this country.

A Clinton presidency would at the least preserve an expectation of decency in public life and a notion of public service in our national ethos. A Trump administration would be anathema to those ideals.
