Due to an editing error, 17 establishments that serve food were misrepresented in the box accompanying the Jan. 7 story “Finding the cleanest restaurant.”
The 17 establishments were reported as having a “poor” health inspection rating from the Environmental Health Department of San Mateo County. However, each of the 17 establishments received a subsequent health inspection and an improved rating ranging from “fair” to “excellent.”
The Environmental Health Department of San Mateo County inspects roughly 3,800 food-serving facilities in the county annually. The department allows for reinspections for establishments to improve the health rating.
The Examiner’s Jan. 7 report was based on a document received by the Environmental Health Department. The Examiner’s report only included those initial ratings by the department and failed to acknowledge the follow-up inspections in which the 17 establishments improved their ratings.
The Examiner regrets the error.
The Examiner erroneously reported the following establishments as having a “poor” health inspection rating when they had received a subsequent inspection in 2009 and an improved rating ranging from “fair” to “excellent”:
