Former San Francisco 49er Dashon Goldson says he’d like to return to California.
He told Sirius XM NFL Radio that he has reached out to the Oakland Raiders and the Los Angeles Rams to offer his services as a sure-tackling safety. (He didn’t mention a desire to play in Santa Clara.)
Goldson is coming off one of his best seasons statistically as a pro, logging a career-high in combined tackles — the most since the 2009 season in Jim Harbaugh’s defense. He’d be an intriguing fit in the Raiders’ defensive backfield as his run stopping skills would complement free agency addition Reggie Nelson, who excels in pass coverage.
Sure, the Silver and Black have addressed some holes in the secondary by drafting Karl Joseph, and Goldson will be 32 this season, but this is the NFL: You have to stockpile talent when you get the chance. (Especially when your top pick is still recovering from a knee injury.)
Goldson said he wants to finish his career out west, and Las Vegas still qualifies.
Cal gets a QB
The football is going to keep flying in Berkeley this fall, and thanks to a recent transfer announcement, it might land in the hands of the intended receiver.
The Golden Bears secured their replacement for Jared Goff on Wednesday in Texas Tech transfer Davis Webb.
Webb, who is ranked favorably by those paid to guess about the NFL Draft, threw for 5,557 yards with 46 touchdowns and 22 interceptions over three seasons for the Red Raiders.
The 6-foot-4 signal caller backed out of a commitment to Pac 12 foe Colorado, so he could team with Cal head coach Sonny Dykes, who also has connections to Texas Tech.
Webb will be eligible to play this fall because he’ll enroll as a graduate student. The world must anxiously await what he’ll be studying.
