Eureka Valley library reopening next weekend

Lion dancers and musicians and maybe even Mayor Gavin Newsom will show off $5.5 million worth of renovations at the grand reopening of the Eureka Valley/Harvey Milk Memorial next weekend.

The midcentury branch has been closed since March and neighbors have been relying on a bookmobile as its replacement.

The renovation included a quiet adult reading area, new restrooms, seismic upgrading, technology upgrades, a refurbished fireplace, express checkout machines and many other fixtures.

It is the 12th of 16 libraries reaping the benefits of a $105.9 million bond measure passed in November of 2000.

Built in 1961, it is one of several that will be considered for preservation after its renovation is complete.

But one library might dodge construction all together and go straight to preservation.
