Remember when the Recording Industry Association of America attempted to make examples of music pirates by suing random schmoes about 10 years ago? Most people settled out of court for $3,500, but a few defendants held out despite appeal after appeal.
According to Yahoo, one such woman is Jammie Thomas-Rasset of Minnesota, who took her case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which just rejected it. She has been ordered to pay $220,000, despite the fact that she claims she has a hubby out of work, four kids and no assets. The RIAA offered to settle for $5,000 during her first trial, then it offered to donate $25,000 to charity as a settlement during her second trial, both of which she declined.
Congratulations, Thomas-Rasset, you have actually managed to make the music industry look like the good guy here.
