‘Light Up the Night’: Ecology-minded celebrities and community leaders turned out Saturday night to launch Empowered by Light, a nonprofit foundation working on delivering renewable-energy lighting to rural communities in Africa. The party, held at Roe in San Francisco’s South of Market area and co-hosted by actor-activist Adrian Grenier and Peter Glatzer, raised more than $100,000 for the organization’s first project, Solar: Zambia.

SPUR dinner backs planning

‘Dine and Discover’: Fine food was on the program at the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association’s 2011 fundraiser, held Thursday at Mission Creek Park and Pavilion, one of The City’s newest open spaces. Chefs from Foreign Cinema, Salt House and Stag Dining Group created the menu. Proceeds go to SPUR’s efforts to support good planning and government in the Bay Area through research, education and advocacy.

‘McSteamy’ attends retail launch

Kiehl’s reopening: On Saturday afternoon, “Grey’s Anatomy” star Eric “McSteamy” Dane attended the launch of the store at its new location at 1971 Fillmore St. in The City. The retailer of skin and hair products also honored Homeless Prenatal Program, a San Francisco nonprofit dedicated to breaking the cycle of childhood poverty, with a $10,000 donation. Actress Rebecca Gayheart, Kiehl’s president Chris Salgardo and HPP founder Martha Ryan also attended the festivities.
