Emeryville Mayor Ken Bukowski allegedly struck and killed a 56-year-old retired San Francisco police officer as he drove down a rain-drenched street in Emeryville Thursday night, police said today.

Emeryville police say Michael Carey Smela of Oakley was struck as he was crossing Hollis Street near 53rd Street just after a public meeting ended to discuss building a bridge for pedestrians in the area, according to Ferdinand Suba.

Smela was reportedly not in a crosswalk when he was struck at about 9 p.m., Suba said.

Emergency crews transported Smela to Highland Hospital in Oakland where he was pronounced dead, according to Suba.

Bukowski stopped and called 911 as soon as he realized he hit somebody, Suba said. It appears he was not speeding, Suba added.

Smela was a security guard employed by AlliedBarton Security Services and working for Novartis. He was on duty at the time of the crash, according to the Alameda County coroner's bureau.

“We are saddened by this tragic death and send our deepest condolences to his family,” Meghan Leader of Novartis said in a prepared statement.
