A large construction project to seismically upgrade three key Hetch Hetchy water delivery pipelines will come close to home this month and next when workers move into the Sunset District. The pipes are critical for transporting water from the Hetch Hetchy Regional Water System to consumers, and the work will increase the reliability of this infrastructure in the case of an earthquake.

Starting March 3 and continuing through April 28 work will be done on “San Andreas Pipeline No. 2,” in Stern Grove. In order to perform work safely, crews will be temporarily shutting down two lanes of southbound 19th Avenue at Sloat Boulevard. The lanes will close at 10 p.m. each night and will open a 6 a.m.

Thos who live and work in the neighborhood: Be warned. While the construction takes place noise, vibrations and dust will be plentiful, and parking and traffic in the area may be impacted.

Questions about the project can be directed to Roberto Lopez from the Public Utilities Commission, at rlopez@sfwater.org. More information about the need for pipeline upgrades can be found here.
