Drag queens art show adorns Scott Wiener’s office

Sen. Scott Wiener’s office is hosting a show of artist Joseph Abbati’s large tapestry portraits of San Francisco drag queens, each with their own story of giving back to the community.

A reception for “Larger Than Life” at 5:30 p.m. Thursday celebrates the Pride-themed exhibit, which will be in place for at least another week, says Abbati, who will be at the event.

“Pride is all about sharing the strength and beauty of our community, and these tapestries have that and so much more,” said Wiener in a statement. “Plus, nothing brings an office to life more than a room full of drag queens.”

The set of nine photographic portraits, enlarged and made into 48- by 60-inch tapestries, was displayed in March at Strut in San Francisco.

Abbati, who is proud to have his artwork in Wiener’s office, sees the exhibit as a chance to make the LGBTQ community feel supported and represented. He also wants more people to know about drag queens’ significant fundraising and volunteering efforts.

He created a portrait of Sister Roma after he took a photo of her on one Thanksgiving morning as she and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence were helping homeless people.

Abbati says the diverse group of drag queens highlighted in his art show contribute not to just LGBTQ community, but to a community as a whole.

Though this art exhibition is the first one in his state senate office, Wiener regularly showcased works by local artists while representing District 8 at the Board of Supervisors, and he hopes to continue doing it, says Jeff Cretan, his communications director.
