Dereck Rodriguez to disabled list with hamstring strain

While the Los Angeles Dodgers got their punishment Thursday in the form of a two-game suspension for right fielder Yasiel Puig, the San Francisco Giants only saw a fine for catcher Nick Hundley. Until Thursday evening.

San Francisco announced that, during the fracas following Tuesday’s shouting match-turned-shoving match between Puig and Hundley, right-handed starter Dereck Rodriguez suffered a Grade 1 right hamstring strain (the least severe grade).

While Puig can appeal his suspension, the injury has immediate consequences for the Giants. Rodriguez was placed on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to Monday. Rodriguez, who has gone from minor league free agent to Rookie of the Year candidate, is 6-1 with a 2.25 ERA.

The son of Hall of Fame catcher Ivan Rodriguez, Dereck Rodriguez was originally drafted as an outfielder, before switching to the mound before the 2014 season. Rodriguez has allowed two or fewer earned runs and pitched at least six innings in each of his last eight starts. Since June 24, in eight starts and one relief appearance, he has a 1.28 ERA across 56 1/3 innings.

Rodriguez was slated to start Friday’s series opener against the Cincinnati Reds, but instead, Casey Kelly will take the bow. Kelly’s father, former major league catcher Pat, is a bench coach for the Reds. A corresponding roster move to Rodriguez’s DL residence will be announced tomorrow.

It’s the second time in two years that a fight has spun off into a significant injury for the Giants. A fight with the Washington Nationals on May 28, 2017 — sparked by a Hunter Strickland fastball that hit Bryce Harper — cost Mike Morse his career. The former outfielder and first baseman, who won a World Series title with the Giants in 2014, went down with a concussion during that fight, and has not played another big league game. He has since embarked on a career in broadcasting.
