Defense carries Lincoln

Even though they were leading by 20 points and there was less than two minutes to play, there was going to be no let up from members of the Lincoln defense.

With Mission perched on the Lincoln 3-yard line, the stout Mustangs defense stiffened, keeping the Bears out of the end zone and preserving a shutout in a hard-fought 20-0 win in the San Francisco Section semifinals.

Playing in a pea-soup-thick fog, there was little offense between the two squads, but the Mustangs got big plays from their defense and special teams and a gutsy performance from star running back David Henderson to advance to their third straight San Francisco Section championship game. The top-seeded Mustangs (8-3) will face off against third-seeded Washington (7-3) in the Turkey Bowl at Kezar Stadium on Thanksgiving. Mission finished 6-3.

Deshon Marman blocked a punt with 6:52 left in the first quarter that led to a 1-yard Henderson touchdown run just 5 seconds later that gave the Mustangs an early 7-0 lead. Lincoln capitalized on a good field position on its next drive and Henderson plowed in from 4 yards out to push the Mustangs’ lead to 14-0.

Ronnie Marania would add a 24-yard scoring toss to Ramiro Raygosa with 1:23 left in the second quarter to give Lincoln a 20-0 advantage heading into halftime — a margin that proved more than enough for a stellar Mustangs defense.

“It was all about containing the outside,” said Marman, who also recovered a fumble. “We watched a lot of film on them and we knew they had speed, so we made sure to force everything into the middle.”

Henderson, who ran for 150 yards on 28 tough carries, went over 2,000 yards on the season (2,068).
