Daily Outrage: Kenyan police shake down bus drivers daily

WHAT: Police extort more than $20 million from Nairobi’s bus drivers each year, and the Kenyan government has done nothing despite numerous complaints. Desperate bus companies began a three-day shutdown Monday — the first day of business after the holiday season — forcing thousands of laborers to walk long distances to work.

BRIBERY 101: A Nairobi traffic cop gets paid about $200 a month, but goes home with no less than $65 every day from shakedowns. The international anti-corruption watchdog group Transparency International ranks Kenya’s police as the most corrupt in East Africa.

WHAT’S BEING DONE: A national police spokesman said, “Every possible effort is being made” to stop the rampant corruption, which is hard to believe under the circumstances.
