Corkscrew tower goes before commissioners

A proposal to build a 425-foot corkscrew condo tower next to the 853-foot Transamerica Pyramid will be considered Thursday by planning and park commissioners.

An official was absent when commissioners met Feb. 11 to rule on the proposal, postponing any decisions.

The Telegraph Hill Dwellers neighborhood group and others have argued that the 248-unit building is too tall for 555 Washington St., would cast too many shadows on parks and was subjected to a biased environmental analysis.

Any decision is likely to be appealed to the Board of Supervisors.
