Thieves stole the copper wiring from the lights on a Belmont street some time overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday, according to police.

Officers began investigating after an open grate on the sidewalk with exposed wires was reported Wednesday about 7 a.m. on Ralston Avenue between Hiller Street and U.S. Highway 101, Belmont police said.

Officers discovered that some time during the night thieves had apparently opened four in-ground utility boxes in the sidewalk and stolen about 600 feet of copper wire used for the streetlights. The wire has an estimated value of about $600, police said.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call Belmont police at (650) 595-7400 or (650) 598-3000.
