If folks on Twitter have any say about things, Andy Cohen won’t be joining Anderson Cooper to usher in 2019 on CNN.
Online observers weren’t immediately impressed by the duo, wearing matching black turtlenecks for the New Year’s Eve broadcast.
Some thought the pair, even though they’re famously friends, had “zero chemistry,” and others were peeved that Cohen wouldn’t stop promoting his “Real Housewives” TV franchise. (A segment with Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban apparently was awkward, too.)
Many missed the verve and wit displayed by Kathy Griffin, who infamously got the boot from the show (after 10 years) after a photo in which she was holding a bloody, fake decapitated head of Donald Trump went viral.
In contrast, Griffin’s happy 2018 comments on social media said “thank you for all the kind tweets” and showed a video of her mom Maggie playing with a puppy named Elliot Stabler (the detective played by Christopher Meloni on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”).
In a sort of interesting twist, Fox News took a dig at its rival when host Jesse Watters brought out Griffin as a surprise guest; it wasn’t the real comedian; it was Fox host Lisa Kennedy Montgomery (formerly of MTV) wearing a red wig.
MARIAH MAKES IT
Here’s news: Mariah Carey made it through live performance on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2018” on ABC-TV without a major mishap.
Wearing a white fur coat over a long glittery dress — in what meteorologists called the coldest New Year’s Eve in New York since 1962 — she sang two songs before mentioning that she could use some tea.
“They told me there would be tea. Oh! It’s a disaster. OK. Well, we’ll just have to rough it. I’m going to be just like everybody else with no hot tea,” she said.
Last year on the same show, she notoriously stopped singing and walked off, claiming the production company sabotaged her performance with technical glitches; the company fired back with a denial.
After what some called her redemptive return, Seacrest said, “And that is why she is Mariah Carey.” Later, a photo on social media showed her enjoying a cup of tea.
CELEB 2018 GREETINGS
Celebrity website Gossip Cop has compiled some fairly tame celebrity New Year’s greetings: Sharon Stone wished “everyone a happy and stylish 2018” and John Mayer wrote, “May you have a pleasant user experience in 2018.”
Patton Oswalt joked, “Here’s to, an error-free use, of commas in 2018!” and Sylvester Stallone’s video advised “Keep punching. Keep your chin up. The best is yet to come.”
Ellen DeGeneres said,” I normally don’t make resolutions, but how’s this? Let’s all tell the truth, treat everyone equally, be kind to all people and animals, and offer the planet respect. Starting… now.”
