The formation of a community benefit district for the south side of Market Street between Fifth and Ninth streets was unanimously approved by the board Tuesday. A tax will be assessed to properties within the district boundaries that will generate at least $563,000 a year. The money will be used for such things as marketing, security and street cleaning.
Mayor Gavin Newsom’s request for $2.3 million in anti-violence funding was put on reserve in a final vote at the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday. The bulk of the money is for beefed-up police enforcement. It will be available upon request by the Police Department.

Citizens’ concerns about service, security and the future of the San Francisco Municipal Railway system will be the focus of a town hall meeting to be held tonight by District 5 Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi and Municipal Transportation Agency Executive Director Nathaniel Ford. The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in the County Fair Building near the intersection of Ninth Avenue and Lincoln Way in Golden Gate Park.
