On Monday, City Attorney Dennis Herrera submitted his support of a community petition filed with the State Water Resources Control Board calling for additional restrictions on the discharge of the Potrero Hill power plant, which is owned by Atlanta-based Mirant Corp.
The Bayview-Hunters Point Community Advocates and Communities for a Better Environment had submitted a petition, urging the state board to better enforce wastewater laws and determine the extent of polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, in the plant’s water discharge.
Mirant’s Potrero plant sucks more than 200 million gallons of water a day from the Bay and returns the water to the Bay as heated, polluted discharge in violation of the environmental standards, according to the City Attorney’s Office.
