E! is booting Chelsea Handler off the network — four months before her contract is up.
The comic's final episode of “Chelsea Lately” will air Aug. 26. The early send-off has been packaged as what the network is calling a monthlong celebration featuring “special episodes” and “surprise guests,” the New York Daily News reports.
In March, when Handler's agent Irving Azoff said she planned to leave when her contract expired, E! executives snarked that “Chelsea has nine months left on her contract and E! will not comment on the future of 'Chelsea Lately' at this time.”
Handler has been open about her dissatisfaction with E!, poking fun at the network.
“They don't know what they're doing,” she recently said when appearing as a guest on Howard Stern's radio show. “They have no ideas. It's a failure.”
In a prepared statement, Handler said: “I myself am more surprised than anyone that I was able to hold down a job for seven years, and it was a fantastic seven years.”
